Love the beach, the ocean, Charleston and Mepkin Abbey (Althought not in August as it is hotter than—-). They have guided tours twice a day.The Abbey Church is so beautiful and interesting. Of course anything touched by Fr.Francis Kline (former Mepkin Abbot) was beautiful. He is buried at Mepkin.

Isle of Palms is a great place to stay. We've stayed at the Sea Cabins a few times. Not huge places but right on the beach and not quite as expensive as getting a house or something. I miss me some Charleston. It's been too long.

The Lutheran Church (ELCA) has a retreat center on the Isle of Palms (the barrier island to the north of Sullivan’s Island). They used to let people stay there if they had openings (this was over 10 years ago, so their policies may have changed) for minimal cost–but you could use the cooking facilities! It’s across the street from a beautiful beach, so it’s not beachfront, but close. Years ago, the cost was much more reasonable than anything else in the area, so it’s worth a phone call to check it out.
