Mike,
re Viola's book, I understand your question to Bob. My own (Catholic) take is at:

I look forward to what you have to say about Voila's book.

iMonk,
Apparently, I subconsciously decided to empathize with you and got my knees sunburned today at my son's T-ball game. Glad to hear in the other posts that your sabbatical is still going well.

Me, RC? No siree!

Having spent a good deal of time in all three major protestant denoms, I am just sort of vanilla conservative protestant.

" I find it amazing that those who claim Christ would idolize this guy for his unbiblical and ungodlyattitude while villifying those who are at least trying to be obedient. Your “Jonah-like” qualities are definitely showing here"

My point was that I believe that Jonah is a genre called satire. It was probably embedded into the culture the way Mark Twain is regarded in ours. It is a wild story about repenting animals, a guy living in a fish, and a whole town reforming it's ways. This is a story. Inspired? perhaps. Literally true? Oh, c'mon!

I think the Book of Jonah exists to demonstrate the folly of people who think they are God's chosen people and get angry when He demonsrates his grace to those outside their narrow view of who gets his favor.

I was only commenting on those Christians who presume to exclude others from a party that they are not hosting.

iMonk,
I sympathize with your sunburn as well, with no laughter. Worst sunburn I ever had was on the knees and lower thighs on the front of my legs. I had to wear those same shorts for a week because any other ones irritated the burn too much. Keep enjoying the baseball and the sabbatical and thanks for keeping the great posts coming as well.
Shalom,
Jeff M

I got one of the worst cases of sunburn I've ever had a Braves game last year. It was July, and we went to a day game. I roasted like a lobster (and the Braves lost).

"#1 - I probably would have worded it as “breed of ’so called’ Christians”. Probably would include thoughts of how I once was similar until I discovered that “my righteousness” wasn’t the measuring stick. Yet the Corinthians WERE Christians, as were all the other messed up in Christ likeness new testament times believers. 1Cor 6:11"

Hmmmm...
I know of no one, including myself, who thinks that their own righteousness is either a measuring stick or the way to salvation.
Interesting how loosely we apply the Word and the righteousness of Christ as to include "any and all" manifestations,and/or interpretations. Carlin exhibited no righteousness. I do not say this lightly. Perhaps as a former catholic he never really heard the Word?
Where are the evangelists?

I assure you that only some of the church at Corinth was messed up. They probably ignored those who spoke correction as "fundies".

1 Cor 6:11??
That applies to those who believe this side of eternity, or is there really a Purgatory?

It used to be dime-dog night ... but inflation hit.

Try sun-burned feet tops ... and ears. I've done knees too. You have my sympathy ... without laughter. That's just painful.

I loved your George Carlin post ... it was perfect.

What's the color problem? Now you have more color ... that's not a problem. ;)

Two extremely important points here.
#1 - I probably would have worded it as "breed of 'so called' Christians". Probably would include thoughts of how I once was similar until I discovered that "my righteousness" wasn't the measuring stick. Yet the Corinthians WERE Christians, as were all the other messed up in Christ likeness new testament times believers. 1Cor 6:11

#2 - There are four, count 'em, four Outback steak houses within 7 to 10 miles of Clipper Stadium. What a horrible conflict: Dime a Dog? Outback? Dime a Dog? Outback? The game WITHOUT the dog? Unthinkable! No Outback? Arrgghh! not again...

So grows the dilemma of the one who would draw closer to his Lord...

Also Craig, you are spot on with that. We always talk about the neat water ride Jonah went on but neglect to remember in the end, he's Still mad at God.
