"Here’s a question: Will Mark Dever be called out by Apprising, Slice and EmergentNO for participating in a conference with Father Richard John Neuhaus?"

OTOH, who cares? As a Christian, I am embarrassed even to be associated with these amateurish, narrow-minded, self-righteous sites. There is an ongoing need for study and research to maintain sound doctrine, but not by people of this caliber. I can find it elsewhere.

If they want to contribute posts to sites whose credibility approximates print publications that feature photos of two-headed babies, fine, but don't expect to be taken seriously by the rest of us. That they even have followings is a sign that our standards have sunk so low that now we're "selling even the sweepings with the wheat" (Amos 8:6). We can do a lot better than this.

Wow. That Merton article that you linked to is so bad that it must surely be a spoof! I haven't read any of Merton, but I would like to someday, and I won't be dissuaded simply because some TR crank calls him the Antichrist.

I have some problems with Thomas Merton, myself, but more because he seemed to be headed in the direction of non-Catholic meditation methods, etc. That article made me feel dirty, especially with so much wrong in it.

Spiritual direction can be good with the right director and with the right ideas about it.

I guess the author has never experienced a "Dark Night of the Soul"

"It’s really interesting believing that there are more people that belong to Jesus than just yourself and a small list of friends."

Interesting? It's been the quickest way I know of to alienate many of your "church friends." Suddenly, people you've know for a long time eye you warily and begin quoting Scripture AT you.

I wonder where you are heading, IM. I was where you are (ISTM) several years ago. The frustrations mounted, and eventually I resigned from ministry in evangelical churches. I took my time, did my research, and eventually made the decision to cross the Bosphorus. I may never completely embrace all that EO espouses, but I must say that even with what I question within EO, it has been healing and restorative; I needed to get off the contemporary evangelical merry-go-round before I completely lost my balance!
