Hi Michael,
Just thought it very interesting that I wrote a small post on this very subject on my blog yesterday: http://outbackbrazil.blogspot.com. Anyway, for what it is worth - this is what we face in our Brazilian outback. Our blog has a few pictures of our church in Recife which where we have invested in providing a simple, but tasteful and comfortable place of worship. We didn't copy anything out there but tried to fit in with other types of public buildings in our culture. Take care, and thanks for the thought provoking posts.

Speaking of de-comissioning a church, a pastor friend of mine told me of a 'de-consecration' service for buildings that had been consecrated for God's work. It involves a pronouncement of a thrice-fold ichabod. The existence of such a service was confirmed to me by another Pastor, but they seemed less than eager to discuss it.

Glad you dived back into the law-gospel again. Your takes on how the law-gospel-law logic goes couldn't be better demonstrated than in contrast to the prodigal acct. and the points you made were stellar. A heads up: I've been writing a bit along these lines myself and will be stealing your line (but will be sure to reference you)...

"The point of the gospel is your gonna do what you want and what you want will be different than what you wanted before the gospel. and you take that chance..."

Very well put. Those who "don't get" grace never get that.

I love how you describe common theological methods of behavior control: law--gospel--law. It is sadly an accurate reflection on fundamentalist Christianity.

also--

"Grace is sometimes completely unwilling to play by the rules you set up . . . It is God's pleasure to love you differently than you love yourself, more than you love yourself, more ferociously, more tenaciously than you love yourself." How different would our lives be if we walked according to this truth, and extended the same love and grace to others!

"Are we willing to admit that the gospel is not enough?" Ow.
The spiritual abuse that you describe is heart-wrenchingly prevalent. Using fear to ensure "godly" behavior does not reflect His heart. I hope that this portion of your podcast is included in your book.
