Thanks for this podcast. I am encouraged to hear Luther quotes discussed with some intelligence and the heart in the right place. Thanks for stressing the bibilicalness of what he is saying and the healthy counseling to souls that he offers, applying law and gospel in different ways to different people in different contexts.

What happens customarily on the internet or in speaking with people hostile to him, you get some Luther quote taken out of context thrown at you to make him and yourself look ridiculous. Or else it is said that his despairing of himself was psychologically unsound or unreasonable.

I don't mind looking ridiculous myself as much, as that when, what you call reformation Gospel, is not heard, appreciated, received, enjoyed, passed on. Luther does so much to get us to think and believe in it in a true and helpful way. He is a good doctor of the Bible and of souls.

Michael,

I gleaned from your post that this has been discussed before. I did a search on your site and found, from 2007, a great series of posts from Josh Strodtbeck on the subject. My ignorance on the subject is fleeting. :)

Thanks for keeping the archive!

I appreciate your points. We aren't going to refight those battles. None of us have the position we have out of ignorance.

John,

Being born again is not a matter of any human decision by it an act of God. Just as human has no decision on in their physical birth, we have no decision in our spiritual birth as well (John 1:12-13, John 3:5-8) This is completely and total the act of God working through Word and Sacraments. St. Paul describes our spiritual condition as being dead in our sins and our being alive is due to God's grace and even our ability to have faith is a gift of God(Eph 2:1-9).

BTW, does an infant need salvation? Last time I check, an infant is just as sinful as I am now and needs Christ as much as I need Christ.

Chris
I grew up Lutheran but not strict Lutheran. Missouri Synod. I no longer go.
There are a couple of things I don't agree with in the Lutheran church. Baptism of infants is one. The message of salvation is the other. The Lutheran church seems to say that through confirmation. you become a member of the church and you acknowledge who Jesus is but I have never heard anyone there say much about being born again.

If I am missing something then please email me.

View of the Sacraments is pretty much it. Beyond that, it's just where's the focus of the denom. I enjoy the focus evangelicals have on missions and evangelism.

I'm an evangelical. I don't really have any desire to change teams.

I should preface this by saying that I, myself, am not Lutheran, nor am I attempting in any way to be divisive. But I am curious, what are your main objections to the Lutheran faith and where would it be incompatible with the SBC?
