It's only after you've won and solved the survival problems that you have the leisure to indulge in theological arguments. Studying Acts with my students, it’s freshly clear to me that the immediate struggle of the early Christians was not only, or even particularly, theological, but practical.

In other words, Christianity didn’t sweep over the Roman Empire on the strength of Young Earth Creationism, Pin-the-tail-on-the-Antichrist, or teetotaling. It’s only after you’ve won and solved the survival problems that you have the leisure to indulge in theological arguments.

Although I also like to see Christian efforts to put the Kingdom of God into practice, I worry about political action. I do think Christians need to be wary of using political power to promote God's work, because Jesus did not. On the other hand, Jesus' actions and message did have deep and far-reaching political implications, though, so if going about the Lord's work makes political waves, then so be it. Good comments.
