About Chaplain Mike

Chaplain Mike works with a hospice organization in central Indiana. He has been in pastoral ministry since 1978, serving in churches in Maryland, Vermont, Illinois, and Indiana before moving into chaplaincy work. He is married to a wonderful gifted wife, Gail, and they have four children and three grandchildren. He thinks baseball is the greatest game ever invented, suffers annually as a Chicago Cubs fan, and is looking forward to putting on a cap again this spring to coach his grandson's Little League team. He loves a wide variety of music, spends way too much money on books, is happy to live in a place where there are four seasons, and is a "true believer" in Apple computers, having used them since 1988. Luther is his favorite theologian, Bach his favorite composer, James Taylor his favorite singer-songwriter, Chicago his favorite city, and hiking his favorite form of exercise. He would love to do more with photography and dreams of having a place in the mountains of Arizona some day. His heart has been captured by the grace of God in Jesus Christ and considers himself a post-evangelical disciple seeking a Jesus-shaped life and hoping to help the church do the same. He is forever grateful to his friend, Michael Spencer, for giving him an opportunity to write for Internet Monk.

By Chaplain Mike We will update the Internet Monk FAQ page in the near future, but I thought it would be worthwhile today to give us all a reminder of some of the basics and “rules” around here. Sunday’s Gospel: Unity—God’s Love in Action

By Chaplain Mike Each Sunday, we present devotional thoughts based upon the Gospel reading from the Revised Common Lectionary. Today is the seventh Sunday in Easter. Today’s Gospel is John 17:20-26 (NRSV). Gospel Text I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their […]

A Disputed “Justification” Text

By Chaplain Mike Since we’ve been talking about N.T. Wright lately, and examining some Scriptures together, I thought it might be timely to look at one text that became a point of controversy in the debate about justification between the more traditional Reformed view and the so-called New Perspective on Paul (NPP), at least as […]

The Beatitudes: Virtues or Proclamations?

By Chaplain Mike I am working through N.T. Wright’s exhilarating book on Christian growth and character, After You Believe. I hope to post a full review soon. First, I’d like to interact with one small aspect of something he presents. Wright’s chapter on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) communicates some wonderful insights about […]

Reflecting on 50 Years of Charismatic Faith

By Chaplain Mike I’d like to have us discuss an interesting article in Christianity Today by David Neff. It is called, “Ardor and Order,” and it’s a reflection upon the impact of the charismatic movement on the mainline and evangelical churches over the past fifty years. I encourage you to read it before submitting comments […]
